Se trata de una escultura de veinte metros compuesta de 7.506 barriles de colores que flota en el Lago Serpentine del londinense parque de Hyde Park. Un obra del artista búlgaro Christo; "The London Mastaba".

Es un homenaje a su mujer, Jeanne-Claude, fallecida en 2009, y que representa "su determinación de hacer el arte libre".

Christo and his late wife Jean-Claude took an inspiration from ancient mastabas (benches) structures that originated in first urban civilisatons of Mesopotamia. Twenty metres in height, the structure consists of 7506 horizontally-stacked coloured barrels. La obra adquiere la característica forma trapezoidal de las tradicionales mastabas -un tipo de tumba egipcia- y es la primera instalación pública al aire libre del artista en el Reino Unido, donde permanecerá hasta el próximo 23 de septiembre.

Su construcción ha llevado dos meses ya que los miles de barriles, de color rojo, azul y malva, se han ido colocando uno a uno con ayuda de una grúa.

Christo (Gabrovo, 1935) reivindica su "libertad" como artista y ha recordado que creció "en un tiempo terrible en la Bulgaria estalinista", de donde consiguió escapar con 21 años "para ser un artista libre, sin restricciones".

"Amo el mundo real. No soporto la vida virtual. Me gusta ver cosas reales porque el mundo del arte está lleno de cosas virtuales e insensibles, aquí estamos con el viento, el sol, la humedad, el frío... cosas reales", manifestó.

Christo y su mujer Jeanne-Claude, formaron una de las parejas más destacadas del conocido como "Land Art", una corriente de arte contemporáneo en la que el paisaje y la obra de arte están estrechamente vinculados.

El matrimonio cubrió con tela el Puente Nuevo de París en 1985 y, diez años después, hicieron lo mismo con el edificio del Reichstag de Berlín, entre otras muchas creaciones artísticas en distintas ciudades del mundo, como Nueva York o Sídney.

Además, la pareja trabajó durante décadas con barriles como los usados para "The London Mastaba", un tema explorado ahora en la exposición "Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Barrels and The Mastaba 1958-2018" que abrirá sus puerta al público mañana en la Galería Serpentine, a pocos minutos a pie del lago que lleva ese nombre.
