Supreme Court Judge Llarena has denied secessionist leader Jordi Sànchez’s release. Therefore, Sànchez cannot be the new Catalan President as was the nationalists’ intention.

After being chosen candidate, Sànchez demanded a special permission to assist to the investiture session scheduled for next Monday. The judge has denied his request, alleging risk of recidivism. Llarena remarks that the political project of the parties supporting Sànchez (ERC and JxCat) consists entirely on implementing the republic they declared last October.

Now, nationalist parties will have to find a new candidate, one not in prison or fugitive, in order to recover the Catalan government.
