Catalonia will remain without a government, at least until next Saturday, when a new voting will be held. The Parliament of Catalonia has voted against Jordi Turull. The Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia) candidate has only received support from his own group and fellow nationalists of ERC. Radical left nationalist coalitions CUP has abstained and thus prevented electing Turull. Constitutionalist parties Ciutadans, PSC and PP voted against the candidate, as well as far-left coalition Catalunya en Comú.

Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín's absence has proved decisive. Last October they fled to Belgium to avoid to avoid prison in Spain. Without their votes, JxCat and ERC have no majority in the Chamber. 64 deputies voted for the candidate, 65 against, and 4 abstained.

This Friday, the Supreme Court of Spain will resolve about Turull's judicial situation. He along with six other Catalan politicians could be indicted for declaring independence last October. This might lead to their imprisonment until the trial takes place.
